Market Overview: India’s feature phone market is about 65 per cent of the total mobile phone installed base. The market for feature phones in India has been growing substantially in the last two years. Currently, there are over 400 million feature phone users in India and the market of these devices witnessed a 55 per cent growth in the December quarter of 2017. In contrast, smart phones grew only 12 per cent. The overall shipment of feature phones in India in 2017 was at 64%, while in 2016 the number was at 58%.

Globally, too, the smart phone market has been facing a slump. Global sales of smart phones to end users totaled nearly 408 million units in the fourth quarter of 2017, a 5.6% decline over the fourth quarter of 2016,
According to a research, close to 200 million 4G feature phones will be potentially sold in India in next five years, improving digital literacy and bridging the digital divide.

Driven by feature phones, India’s overall mobile phone market grew 48% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018. It almost doubled from a year ago while smart phone sales remained flat.
